Measuring intellectual functioning is sometimes referred to as measuring “IQ”. These measures help to identify the pattern of cognitive strengths and weaknesses across a range of areas. The most common measures used to assess intellectual functioning are the Wechsler Scales: WPPSI-IV (age range 2-6), the WISC-V (age range 6-16) and the WAIS-IV (age range 16-90 years).
An assessment of intellectual functioning can assist in a better understanding of a range of presenting issues such as:
• assessment of lower-than-expected intellectual functioning (intellectual disability)
• assessment of high intellectual potential (giftedness)
• neurodevelopmental differences such as ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder
• academic or behavioural difficulties in the educational setting or workplace
